Mary-Jane
She was born as identical twins.
Two bodies in one body.
Two brains in one skull.
Mary liked to stand on the roof and wave her pants at helicopters.
Jane liked to lie on her back in the cellar, pretending to be a bug.
Mary liked to cycle naked to school.
Jane wore clothes in the bath.
Mary dreamt of big men with big bulges.
Jane dreamt she had a bucket for a head.
They tried to compromise.
Mary tried to settle it with an arm-wrestle.
Jane tried to settle it by crying and crying and crying.
Jane woke up with a pillow shoved down hard on her face
and the sound of Mary coughing.
Jane crept out one night and ran until her feet grew engines.
Mary woke with blisters.
They sometimes make love,
they sometimes try to cut themselves apart,
but Mary-Jane is no doctor.
